Louis and Laura dance smoothWhen people speak of ballroom dancing, they are usually speaking of dances such as Waltz, Foxtrot and Tango. Others, however, think of Rumba and Cha Cha as "Ballroom" dances. As you can see, "Ballroom" is a word that can encompass many dances or a select few. For our purposes, we will refer to "Ballroom" as the Smooth and Standard dances.

What are Smooth and Standard dances? They are the beautiful and graceful dances that flow smoothly across the dance floor. The men typically are dressed in classy suits and the ladies wear ball gowns.

"Smooth" and "Standard" refer to the categories in which certain dances are classified. Smooth dances are what we call "American Style" and Standard dances are called "International or English Style." In other words, most of American dance studios focus on Smooth dances while the rest of the world focuses on Standard dances.

Although these dances have the same names, they are very different. American style (Smooth) dances have different steps, rules and even tempos. As well, The Smooth dances allow the dancers to open up in their dance position while the Standard dances are danced in closed position the entire time. Louis Bar and Laura Cantu dance Smooth

The Smooth dances include:

-Waltz | Foxtrot | Tango | and Viennese Waltz

The Standard dances include:

-Waltz | Tango | Viennese Waltz | Foxtrot | and Quick Step

In America, it is customary for people interested in social dancing to learn the Smooth dances so that they may have the knowledge and ability to dance anywhere in the United States with relative ease. Most of the people that decide to dance Standard have decided to compete or expand their knowledge and technical abilities in the dances.

Whether you decide to dance Smooth or Standard, we are sure you'll enjoy every minute of it
