Benefits of Private Lessons
Private lessons are meant to help you learn to dance to your best
and highest potential. Private classes are catered specifically for
your needs and are conducted at your rate of learning. Other
reasons for choosing private dance lessons are that they are
essential and even necessary to reach high levels in dancing.
What to expect in a Private Lesson
Initial private ballroom dance lessons often begin with an evaluation
in which the instructor discusses your goals and observes you during
various dance steps. Afterward, the instructor will suggest a plan for
meeting your dancing needs and goals.
Depending on your goals, it is customary to enroll a series of private
lessons to ensure dedication, discipline, uniformity, and to
maximization your potential in learning to dance. Because the
instructor is not focused on teaching a group of dancers, you may
ask questions at any time and the instructor will explain concepts as
needed until you understand. Also, you have control of what and
how you wish to learn. However, please keep in mind that the
instructor has lots of experience in teaching dance and will most
likely know how to help you reach your goals in the shortest
amount of time.
Once you’ve finished your initial private lesson, you will continue
on your “dance program,” which will usually consist of private and
group classes. To prepare you for your program, it is essential that
you know what to expect in a private lesson.
A private dance lesson consists of an instructor teaching you
proper dance steps, techniques, theories, musicality, etc.
Private lessons may be taken individually or as a couple. When
taking a private lesson, you need to consider that it can be very
intensive. Unlike the group classes, the private lesson focuses
completely on you and therefore you may have to work harder
than usual. This may be frustrating at times, but it is also very
rewarding and is the best way to improve quickly.
Private Lesson Etiquette
• Show respect for the teacher. Teachers have worked long,
hard and have made many sacrifices to master their skills.
Many have dedicated their lives to dance and wish to share
their passion with you.
• Be on the dance floor and ready to dance On Time.
• Private lessons encourage discussion, questions and answers.
Please feel free to ask your teacher questions at any time.
• If you feel that you already know the material the instructor is
presenting, inform your instructor. You may be asked to
demonstrate the material with proper lead/follow/connection,
technique, musicality or steps to ensure that you reach your
dancing goals.
• Pay attention during class.
